Welcome. Let us share with you the rich and varied architectural history of Santa Monica. We have so many incredible landmark properties dotting our landscape, and we welcome the opportunity to share them with you.

In case you were wondering, a National Historic Landmark can only be designated by the Secretary of the Interior. Properties are awarded "landmark" distinction because they exude a special and unique quality. If you want to get technical (sorry, but we actually ENJOY this stuff!) it was the Historic Sites Act of 1935 that marked the emergence of landmark properties, calling them essential in illustrating or interpreting the heritage of the United States. FYI: In 1983, the City of Santa Monica wrote the first draft of the Historic Preservation Element, it passed into law into 2001.

Currently, Santa Monica has more than 400 residential properties listed in City Hall's Historic Resources Inventory - 60 properties and counting have been landmarked by the city. Come, learn our local history.
